Parts of Speech

There are eight parts of speech, namely: adjectives; adverbs; conjunctions, interjections; nouns; prepositions; pronouns and verbs.

Examples:

               noun       verb           adverb              preposition                      noun
The         dog         slept        peacefully                on                   the        floor.

 

pronoun          verb              adjective         adjective       noun
She                 wore     a          long                white        gown.

 

             verb          noun        conjunction                      noun                verb          adjective
He          liked        cheese,            but               the        cupboard            was              empty.

 

ADJECTIVE

Modifies a noun or pronoun.

 Example: a strong wind

ADVERB

Modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Example: He worked rapidly.

CONJUNCTION

             Connects other words.

 Example: he and she

INTERJECTION

Expresses a strong or sudden feeling.

Example: Oh!

NOUN

Name of a person, place, thing, action, idea, or quality.

Example: Wilson Company (proper noun); a company (common noun)

PREPOSITION

Shows the relation between its object and another word.

Example: of; to

PRONOUN

            Used in place of a noun.

Example: it; those

VERB

Denotes action or state of being.

 Example: is; bring
